This weekend I regrettably took my four-and-a-half-year-old son to the movie theater to see the new PG-rated Disney-Pixar film “Up” This was our first movie theater outing ever.
“Up” is a cute film about a 78-year-old balloon salesman, Carl, who attaches thousands of helium-filled balloons to his home and then flies away to South America, a place he and his late wife have only dreamed about living.
Along with a young boy-scout stowaway, Carl learns that the dreams you hold don’t always turn out the same in reality. In fact, the places aren’t as beautiful and the people aren’t as nice.
The movie is cute but it was not appropriate for my son. He enjoyed the movie until a very violent climax that involved guns, sword-fighting, dog attacks and ultimately a death. At one point during the action, my son turned to me with a shaky voice and told me he didn’t like the movie because it was ” scary.” I held him and covered his eyes through until the scary part ended. I began to question whether this move was PG or PG-13.
Overall, Up is a cute film – but it has some very adult themes. If you’re looking for a family movie this summer, skip “Up” and stick with programming found on Noggin or Nick Jr. I think I’ll be avoiding PG films for awhile thanks to Up.
